Department: Zoology
Research topics: Paleontology and Evolutionary Biology (Macroevolution)
Research: The Macroevolution and Paleobiology Lab (MacroPaleo Lab) is primarily focused on documenting deep-time evolutionary and diversity patterns, mostly using paleontological data. Because of that, the research done at the MacroPaleo Lab encompasses different areas usually associated with Paleontology and Evolutionary Biology. These include: morphological description of extinct species (taxonomy and systematics), characterization of macroevolutionary patterns (phenotypic patterns or diversification dynamics), paleoecological and paleoenvironmental characterization, conservation paleobiology e evolutionary biomechanics. For that, we use methods such as phylogenetic analyses, phylogenetic comparative methods, modelling, virtual morphology and paleontology, geochemistry. We also do fieldwork to prospect new fossil localities and collect new specimens. The MacroPaleo Lab is mostly focused on studying vertebrates and the groups already studied by the lab members include dinosaurs, crocodylians, turtles, mammals and marine reptiles.
