Mário de Pinna , Assistant Professor, teaches Vertebrate Zoology, Systematics and Biogeography. He took his Bachelor's Degree in Biology at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro in 1988, and received his Ph.D. in Evolutionary Biology from the American Museum of Natural History/City University of New York in 1992. He worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the Division of Fishes, National Museum of Natural History (Smithsonian Institution) and at the Department of Geology, Field Museum of Natural History. He joined the Department of Zoology at USP in 1995.

His research interests are on systematic ichthyology and the study of evolutionary patterns in general. Within ichthyology, his activities are mainly on the phylogeny and taxonomy of catfishes, especially from South America, Africa and Southeast Asia. A good portion of his papers are on the parasitic catfishes, family Trichomycteridae. Currently he is also working on some higher-level problems within teleosts. Dr. de Pinna also has an interest in theoretical systematics, in particular on questions related to homology, rooting, character optimization and ontogeny. He serves as advisor for graduate students in vertebrate systematics.

Dr. de Pinna is currently Vice-President of the Willi Hennig Society, and will be hosting the Society's 1998 annual meeting in São Paulo.
