Life changes continuously over time through descent with modification. All biological systems evolve therefore Evolution is Biology's keystone. A historical discipline by definition, Evolutionary Biology nevertheless relies both on experimental evidence and historical inference to address phenomena that occur in time scales ranging from a few days to billions of years. Because it invariably deals with living, complex sytems, Evolutionary Biology is interdisciplinary par excellence and significant conceptual breakthroughs will most likely occur when experts from different areas are brought together with the goal of exchanging and synthesizing knowledge.

The São Paulo School of Advanced Sciences (SPSAS) is an initiative by the Fundação de Amparo a Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP), a governmental funding agency whose mandate is to provide financial support for scientific and technological research developed in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. The Advanced Schools intend to bring together leading experts and outstanding students/post-docs from all over the world in order to advance areas considered strategic for Brazilian science. This initiative also aims at attracting the most promising prospective graduate students, post-docs and faculty to the several institutions that make up the state university system of São Paulo.

SPSAS-evo is the 6th initiative of its kind. Post-docs, undergraduate and graduate students of any nationality or scientific background conducting research in Evolutionary Biology are strongly encouraged to apply.
