The Committee

The Instituto de Biociências (IB) has a long-standing tradition in research on living beings, investigating their structure, reproduction, evolution, organization and relationship to their environment. These investigations are conducted in a space with superb infrastructure for the development of research programs. The five departments in the Institute (Botany, Ecology, Physiology, Zoology, Genetics and Evolutionary Biology) have modern equipment at their disposal, which allows for the development of innovative research lines supported by national and international granting agencies.

The research carried out here by the faculty has a multi- and interdisciplinary character, combining different approaches to the study of living beings. Besides individual projects coordinated by the faculty, the Institute also collaborates in high-impact integrated projects such as the genomic sequencing of Xylella, Xanthomonas and sugar cane, BIOTA, CEDIP and FAPESP-supported studies on climate change, and MCT/CNPq/CAPES' PROTAX. More recently, Institute researchers helped to create FAPESP's BIOEN, one of the largest bioenergy programs in the world.

In addition to these major initiatives, the Institute coordinates two of the National Institutes of Science and Technology projects, Bioethanol and Stem Cells and also The Human Genome Research Center (HGRC), a Research, Innovation and Dissemination Centers (CEPID) funded by FAPESP. The main focus of the Institute's research relates to important current themes in biology, themes relating to biodiversity, climate change and bioenergy. The Institute's research is done not only at the post-graduate level, but also at the undergraduate and post-doctoral levels.

  • Discuss and plan scientific research policy for the institute.
  • Stimulate interactions between the institute's researchers, promoting debates and discussions about current research.
  • Encourage cooperationbetween outside researchers, home and abroad.
  • Facilitate the channels for obtaining research grants.
  • Manage grants and financial help, undergratuate and post-doctorate ones in particular.
  • Plan and organize the use of grants and support funds received from support agencies.
