Prof. Dr. Marcos Buckeridge


Marcos Buckeridge is Professor of Plant Physiology. He holds a PhD in Plant Biochemistry from the University of Stirling, Scotland. Buckeridge is Director of the National Institute of Science and Technology of Bioethanol (INCT do Bioetanol). His work has generated four edited books and more than 150 publications in plant physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology of crop species, forest and urban tree growth and development related to the Global Climate Changes and bioenergy production. In 2010, Buckeridge was appointed a Lead Author for the Intergovernmental Panel of Climatic Changes (IPCC) report (AR5) published in 2014. In 2017 he was appointed as a Lead Author of the IPCC for the Special Report Global Warming of 1.5oC, to be released in 2018. Buckeridge is a member of the Institute of Advanced Studies of the University of São Paulo coordinating the Program USP-Global Cities. He is the current President of the Academy of Sciences of the State of São Paulo.

Prof. Dr. Oswaldo Keith Okamoto


Oswaldo Keith Okamoto is Associate Professor in the Department of Genetics & Evolutionary Biology of the Institute of Biosciences at USP. He is a member of the research and managing team of the Human Genome and Stem Cell Research Center at USP. He is also a researcher and member of the Executive Board of IRIS, an initiative linked to the inova.USP (The Innovation Center of USP). He holds a Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from UNESP, a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from USP, and a “Livre-docência” degree in Cell Biology from USP. He had a postdoctoral appointment in Genomics at Harvard University and a training in Cell Therapy at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. From 2003 to 2006, he coordinated the Center for Experimental Research at the Research & Education Institute of the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein. He is a former Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery of the Escola Paulista de Medicina / UNIFESP (2007-2010). In 2017, he was Visiting Professor at the University of Southampton. He is active in research, development and innovation, focusing on the biology of stem cells and cancer. At USP, he directs the Laboratory of Translational Genomics (LTG), which uses interdisciplinary approaches with the purpose of deepening knowledge about the pathophysiology of human diseases and investigating new therapeutic strategies. LTG collaborates with several institutions and participates in Brazil’s National Cell Therapy Network (RNTC), created by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq) and the Department of Science and Technology (DECIT) of the Ministry of Health, aiming to benefit our society by expanding the competence in biotechnology and regenerative medicine. In October 2018, he was elected Vice-Director of the Institute of Biosciences at USP.
