The Department of Botany has a long-standing tradition in training graduate students, leading the way in diverse areas of plant biology. The Graduate Program in Botany was established in the early 1970s, and up to 2014, the Department provided the Master’s Degree to 309 students and the Doctoral Degree to 352 students. Professors and scientists of the Department offer a total of 63 specialized courses for the Graduate Program, with the aims of training students for critical reading, raising questions and hypotheses, developing rational and efficient experimental designs, exploiting the recent advances in their field, and understanding how scientific knowledge is produced.

Currently, the Graduate Program in Botany aims to train students in six major areas of plant biology:

- Anatomy of Vascular Plants
- Systems Biology
- Biology, Systematics, Ecology and Use of Algae
- Plant Physiology and Development
- Phytochemistry
- Systematics, Evolution and Biogeography of Vascular Plants
- Teaching in Botany

Education

Botanica

The Department of Botany is strongly committed to maintaining academic excellence, offering 28 courses in the Undergraduate Program in Biological Sciences and an outstanding Graduate Program that integrates the state of the art of scientific developments and awakens the student curiosity and creativity. Moreover, the Department of Botany also participates in inter-unit courses with other Departments of the IB/USP, for both Undergraduate and Graduate Programs. The professors and scientists associated to the Department of Botany teach basic and specialized courses in which they cover the latest scientific developments in many areas of Plant Biology. The Department aims at training skilled professionals, who are well prepared for teaching, developing high quality research, and who have a thorough understanding of the scientific method.

Undergraduate

Graduação

The Institute of Biosciences offers Bachelor and Licentiate courses with an availability of 120 vacancies per year. The Undergraduate Program in Biological Sciences aims at a solid and broad presentation of the concepts, principles and theories of biology, enabling the biologist to develop strategic actions, to diagnose and solve problems, to elaborate and execute scientific projects, as well as to transmit knowledge. The Department of Botany contributes with the Undergraduate Program in Biological Sciences by offering 28 courses that cover many aspects of Plant Biology, from basic courses on Plant Physiology and Plant Diversity to advanced courses on Plant Biotechnology. In addition, the Department of Botany also participates in inter-unit courses with other Departments of the IB/USP, which are focused on broad fields such as biological diversity, sustainability, scientific philosophy and the relationship with the society. Providing up to date education in Botany, within the Undergraduate Program of Biological Sciences or related Sciences, is therefore an important goal of the Department of Botany.
